Types of Glass Art

These are different types of glass art which you can adopt to generate variety of glass artwork.
Hot glass – It involves heating glass in a furnace. Glass sculptures, moulds, vases and ornaments are various forms of hot glass artwork. For instance, glass blowing technique is a practice of shaping molten glass by blowing air into it through a tube. This way you can make something simple to complex glass artwork. Compared to glass blowing, glass casting method involves pouring hot glass into a pre-designed mould.

Cold glass – Even though you don’t require heating the glass, you can still produce glass artwork. This is because acid treatment is given to alter glass appearance, which gives an ultimate frosted look. This technique is called ‘acid etched glass’. Or, you may choose to blast the glass with gritty material like aluminum or silica carbide against the glass. As a result, you will get sandblasted glass which is quite safer to produce than acid etching process.
Warm glass – You can get this type of glass art by heating glass in kiln instead of furnace. It involves fused glass and slumping. While slumping involves bending of glass sheets, fusing glass allows melting of glass. The temperature required to bend the glass is usually less than needed to melt the glass.
Lampworking or flameworking – It is a type of glass art where hot flame/torch is used to melt the glass. A variety of torches can perform various lampworking techniques. Flameworking is used to make jewels, beads, small sculptures, and ornaments. When flameworking, you must anneal your glass artwork immediately after you’re done. This is because it reduces the chance of glass breakage. Find out which temperature will work best for glass you use. Don’t forget to wear your safety equipment while flameworking. Perform research as much as possible to know what you’re getting into.
